Summary: This intense, moving 2003 drama from U. Chatterjee, based on a true story, takes an unflinching look at Afghanistan's Taliban regime and its brutal repression of women. Manisha Koirala turns in an electrifying star performance as Sushmita, an Indian woman who falls for a charming Afghani named Jaanbaz (Naweb Shah) and marries him despite her family's objections. But once they arrive in Afghanistan, Jaanbaz changes drastically, forcing Sushmita to conform to his society's stunningly oppressive rule for women. When she decides to fight back, she puts her life on the line in a desperate attempt to escape.
